Learning Support

Head of Department:   Mrs M Bartlett

We aim to provide a happy, secure environment where students of all abilities can work to achieve their full potential. Dyslexia, dyspraxia and associated difficulties are supported and we are able to develop self esteem and self confidence so that students become independent learners.   The Learning Support department is able to assist students in all areas of the curriculum. This is particularly important for students in Years 10 and 11 who have chosen Study Support as one of their option subjects.

Students in years 7, 8 and 9 are tested annually for reading, spelling and speed of processing, which enables us to identify any difficulties they may be experiencing.  Appropriate help is offered either by extra support within the classroom or by providing individual lessons. Some students require our help for a short time; others will need support for the duration of their time at the school.  It is very encouraging that many students develop their learning techniques to such an extent that support is no longer required once they are in the upper school, often achieving exceptionally high grades in their final GCSE examinations.

We have close links with an Educational Psychologist for those students who need an additional assessment, either to support their learning or their applications for access arrangements in GCSE examinations.

The department is also able to offer a programme designed to help children recognise, understand and manage their emotions to enhance their educational experience and success.  Mrs Jack is a registered ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant), who, following referrals from staff, will devise individual programmes for students which offer many benefits including:

  • Feeling supported by having `special time` and being listened to
  • Development of greater self-awareness
  • Learning to talk about difficulties
  • Development of coping strategies
  • More successful interaction with peers
  • Increased self-esteem.
