Year 9 Camp

I was told that Bude would be an adventure and it didn’t disappoint. There was a wide variety of activities which all required team work. The accommodation was great and so were the instructors. They were all very helpful and friendly and helped us overcome our fears. My instructor, Smudge, led us to a victory in the Super Team Challenge.

My favourite activity of the week, however, had to be Caving. There was a network of tunnels underneath the centre which was like a maze. There were many tight spaces to get thought which made the experience more realistic.

We participated in many wet activities, in the sea and in the canal. Surfing was much harder than I expected but body boarding was relatively easy. We got rather wet during kayaking. We had to work as a team and push all the kayaks together up the canal. It wasn’t very far at all but it was difficult.

There were also several land activities we took part in. These included mountain boarding, which was great. We got pushed down a ramp which was at the top of a hill, so we could ride down and perform some turns and tricks. Several of us managed a 180° Power slide, which most of the time ended in crashing or falling off.

“Team Trail” was one of the hardest activities. We were all attached by a rope, while going round an assault course. We also weren’t allowed to touch the floor and had to use planks and crates to stand on. We also had to jump into a pool of water and swim up a pipe, out of the other end. It was extremely difficult because of the rope. There was also a wooden tower to climb while we watched out for obstacles like chains and planks. At the top, the instructors had a chance to spray us with the cold hose! We had to slide down a tube into another pool of water before getting sprayed by the hose again.

In the evening, after we finished our daily activities, we had run-a-round activities, crabbing, beach games and even a swim in the sea pool. Then we had a chance for a quick change, dinner and then the evening entertainment. Fancy Dress, Karaoke, Talent Night and Disco. Every day there was a different activity to go to. There were many acts and performers including Ross Castle who got second prize in Fancy Dress and Callan and Lisa who received second prize in the Karaoke. There was a football match every day and there was even a tournament. Bed time was at 10:30. But we didn’t get much sleep! We had to wake up at 7 o’clock to get ready to go for a run or swim. Most times I went for a swim (or a wade) in the sea pool, but the run was easy too.

Thanks to all the teachers for planning and attending the trip.
